Although the United Methodist Church’s Judicial Council decided by a vote of 6-3 last Friday that the consecration of an openly homosexual bishop violates church law, Karen Oliveto, the first openly gay bishop in the United Methodist Church (UMC), will not be removed from her post. She is still considered “in good standing” until an administrative or judicial process is completed.
According to a statement from Good News, an evangelical ministry within the United Methodist Church, the vote was a “convoluted and ultimately unsatisfactory ruling” that will likely result in no penalty for Oliveto. Good News believes that rulings like these will eventually result in a schism within the denomination.
