U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, a Democrat from Memphis serving in the U.S. House, introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump along with Democrat Reps. Al Green of Texas, Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, and Adriano Espaillat of New York.
Tweeted Cohen, “The train of injuries to our Constitution must be brought to an end.”
Trump is being accused of obstruction of justice, undermining the independence of the federal judiciary, and other offenses. Rep. Marcia Fudge of Ohio and Rep. John Yarmuth of Kentucky also plan to join the initiative.
The impeachment effort is not backed by the Democrats as a whole; in fact, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said such a tactic should not be a priority but rather unifying the country.
In a Republican-controlled House, it is unlikely that this latest move will pass.
Reps. Cohen and Gutierrez are members of the House Judiciary Committee, which is the committee that would be tasked with hearing the charges initially.
