Protect Children or Corporate Profits?

Last week, the Tennessee House overwhelming passed a bill that would allow the state to pay the cost of a local school district having to defend a lawsuit brought by legal organizations such as the ACLU because the district had chosen to protect a student’s bodily privacy by designating use of common locker room facilities based on the biology of its students, not their gender identity.

But in the Senate, Speaker Randy McNally worked with the bill’s opponents to put it off until next year.

Now, why would Speaker McNally put off protecting local schools that respect the bodily privacy of boys and girls? Let’s hope it wasn’t because of pressure from the Tennessee Titans, Amazon, and other corporate giants who said it would hurt their businesses. Because neither our values nor our children should be for sale.

Is There a ‘Dignity Clause’ in the Constitution?

Last week three individuals sued the governor because Tennessee does not allow them to change their birth certificate from male to female now that they have figured out which one they want to be.

But most telling is this assertion in the complaint, “Tennessee’s Birth Certificate Policy . . . violates the United States Constitution’s guarantees of equal dignity.”

When did dignity become something protected by the Constitution? The answer? In 2015, when the Supreme Court, in Obergefell v. Hodges, said same-sex couples desiring to marry had a right to “equal dignity in the eyes of the law.”

But the most tragic thing of all is to believe that dignity comes from the law, not from having been made in the image of God.

A Tennessee Legislator’s Oath of Office

Tennessee’s state legislators, upon taking office, take an oath not to assent to anything “which shall appear to me injurious to the people, or . . . that shall have a tendency to lessen or abridge their rights and privileges, as declared by the Constitution of this state.”

However, their vote is often tinged with a desire to curry favor with or avoid the wrath of the Speaker of their House; but there is no oath of fealty to their Speaker’s wishes.

More importantly, a true Christian legislator’s overarching loyalty must be to the Lord Jesus Christ, or else he or she denies Him as Lord.

When Christian legislators allow their conscience before the Lord to inform their decisions, not their standing before their Speaker, the citizen’s constitutionally guaranteed rights and privileges are best protected.
