Modern-Day Cannibals

Mainstream media seems intent on digging up non-criminal things our political leaders did 30 and sometimes 40 years ago and asking people if they are offended. Perhaps in hindsight or according to today’s mores, what they did was insensitive or insulting.

But do non-criminal actions decades ago make a person unfit for office today? Those who have never experienced the grace of God seem to think so, but for Christians, God calls us to a higher standard. If what people once did is not who they now are, we should thank God for the change in them, not blast them for their past. What current problem is that solving?

Scripture warns us, “If you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another.” Too many in media are nothing short of modern-day cannibals.

When Politics, Not Law, Guides the Attorney General

Last week, Tennessee’s Attorney General, Herbert Slatery, issued an opinion regarding a law passed eighteen years ago that allowed courts to enhance a criminal sentence if the victim had been targeted because of the person’s “gender.”

He opined that “gender” referred to a psychological and cultural construct distinct from one’s biological sex and thus referred to a transgendered person. But since sex is not referenced in the statute and gender, he says, is different from biological sex, that means Attorney General Slatery has construed the law in a way that prohibits enhancement of a sentence because, for example, the criminal targeted the woman strictly because she was a woman.

That couldn’t have been the Legislature’s intent eighteen years ago, but that’s what happens when today’s politics, not law, becomes the Attorney General’s guiding principle.

A Freedom that Leads to Slavery

During President Trump’s State of the Union speech, he said, to the applause of Republicans, “We are born free and we will stay free.”

While we shouldn’t nitpick his speech, it is worth considering such a statement from a biblical worldview—Are we really born free? Not according to the Bible.

While Adam and Eve were given great freedom, there was one tree among a garden full of trees from which they could not eat; it served, we might say, as a sacramental reminder that their freedom was under and subject to God.

But they rejected the freedom they were given, and ever since people have sought freedom apart from God.

That kind of freedom results in a slavery to sin that leads to death. And that kind of freedom should break our hearts, not lead to our applause.

Does Modern Evangelicalism ‘Support’ Infanticide?

Our nation was appalled by New York’s abortion law condoning infanticide. Gov. Cuomo, a Catholic, defended the law said, “I have my own Catholic beliefs, how I live my life … That is my business as a Catholic. I don’t govern as a Catholic.”

In other words, his Catholicism pertains only to his spiritual life, not his secular life.

But before Protestants heap scorn on Gov. Cuomo’s theology or the Catholic Church, they need to remember that this dualistic way of viewing life is rampant within much of modern evangelicalism. Far too many evangelicals today see engaging government as just polishing the brass on a sinking ship, interfering with spiritual pursuits as they await going to heaven.

By embracing this sacred-secular split, those evangelicals unwittingly lend aid to a worldview that can condone and justify infanticide.

Sitting in Honor of Sit-Ins

When Gov. Bill Lee didn’t stand at the urging of the keynote speaker at a recent event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., some castigated him.

The speaker had asked attendees to stand if they supported government-provided universal health care and opposed a wall on our southern border. He accused those not standing of being disingenuous in their desire to honor Dr. King because Dr. King would have supported these things.

But who says one cannot honor a person unless in complete agreement with that person? Moreover, who can say what Dr. King’s position on these current issues would be 41 years after his death?

However, we can say this: If Gov. Lee disagreed on those policy issues, then for him to have stood would have dishonored the man who encouraged sit-ins against laws he thought were wrong.

Violating Bill Lee’s Religious Liberty

Last week Freedom From Religion Foundation wrote to Bill Lee demanding that he cancel the religious service to be held prior to his inauguration. They said it violated the Establishment Clause.

That was quite a shock given that Governor Lee was, at the time of that service, still private citizen Lee and the event was being paid for by private, not government funds.

This is about as much an establishment of religion as Lee inviting all the Tennessee members of the foundation to join him for church next Sunday.

The fact is Freedom From Religion Foundation wants government to discriminate against religion by excluding the religious view that government and religion are insuperably connected by establishing the religious view that religion and government never intersect.

That is the real establishment of religion and a violation of Lee’s religious liberty.

Motivation to Pray for Our Governor

With Tennessee’s new governor to be sworn in this Saturday, it’s natural to wonder what he will do for us. But the real question, biblically, is what will God do through him?

In Psalm 4, King David says that people were saying to him, “Who will show us any good,” perhaps looking to him for good things even as we may be tempted to look to Mr. Lee. But David’s response to their question was, “LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.”

David knew that there was no innate good in him; he was conceived and born in sin. He knew what the New Testament affirms, that the flesh avails nothing.

Knowing this should spur us to pray for Mr. Lee and ask God to direct him toward that which is righteous and just.

Who Will Most Influence Bill Lee?

Some political conservatives are concerned that Governor-elect Bill Lee is being surrounded by RINOs, the acronym for “Republicans In Name Only.” They are concerned that these assumed RINOs will negatively influence Mr. Lee’s decisions.

But in Proverbs 21:1, God tells us through King Solomon that “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes” (NKJV).

This is nothing more than Solomon’s recognition of the overarching sovereignty of God and the truth that, years later, King Nebuchadnezzar would profess, that our God does “according to His will . . . among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand.”

As the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon once said, “There is no attribute more comforting to [God’s] children than that of God’s Sovereignty.”

Praying for Those in Authority

Next week Tennessee’s Legislature will reconvene, and on the 19th, Bill Lee will be sworn in as our 50th governor.

The Apostle Paul exhorted the early church to pray for all those in authority, and it is right that we pray for these new leaders as they are sworn into office and begin their service. They will have to make some hard decision that will affect every Tennessean. We need to pray that God will grant them not just knowledge, wisdom, and discernment, but also the courage to do what is right in God’s eyes and fear Him more than not being re-elected.

And pray for the team here at the Family Action Council of Tennessee as we work to exhort our legislators and governor to protect God’s design for marriage and the family, life, and religious liberty.
