While the American Medical Association (AMA) officially opposes physician-assisted suicide, the organization is being pressured to take a neutral stance, notes Michelle Cretella, the head of the American College of Pediatricians.
A change to a neutral stance might sound innocent enough, but such a change in California led to the passage of laws that legalized assisted suicide and could do the same in other states that might adopt a neutral stance.
Cretella is urging folks to contact their AMA member physicians about this issue. “Let them know that if you are in pain and if you’re at the end of your life [that] what you want is a healer, not a killer,” she explains. “[Tell them] that you don’t want your physician to have a license to kill; you want your physician to be there to comfort you and be by your side.”
