Trump’s ‘Tame’ Religious Liberty Executive Order

President Trump’s much-anticipated executive order on religious liberty was issued yesterday and received what might be called a lackluster response from religious liberty advocates. Some even called it milquetoast hogwash.

A rather robust draft executive order got leaked to LGBT activists earlier in the year, and no doubt their howls of protests (along with perhaps input from the President’s daughter and son-in-law) resulted in the rather “tame” version that was signed yesterday.

President Trumpets National Day of Prayer

While President Trump’s executive order regarding religious freedom did not go as far as most evangelicals had hoped, his proclamation recognizing the National Day of Prayer contained the following noteworthy statement:

The religious liberty guaranteed by the Constitution is not a favor from the government, but a natural right bestowed by God. Our Constitution and our laws that protect religious freedom merely recognize the right that all people have by virtue of their humanity.

Woman’s Freedom to Pray in Own Home Challenged

Mary Ann Sause, a retired Catholic nurse on disability in Louisburg, Kansas, was allegedly ordered by cops in her own home to stop praying. The police were originally responding to a minor noise complaint but then allegedly proceeded to harass her. First Liberty Institute, which is representing Sause, completed oral arguments in the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday. “The government’s attempt to redefine the First Amendment through this case could set a dangerous precedent for religious freedom,” said Stephanie Taub, senior counsel for First Liberty Institute.

UN Gay Rights Envoy’s Conflict with Religious Liberty

According to the United Nations envoy for homosexual rights, the recently appointed Vitit Muntarbhorn, religious freedom should not be considered an absolute and it should be trumped by homosexual rights if there is a conflict between the two. His views are out of step with the views of the 73 countries worldwide and of almost 40 percent of all the UN member states that currently have anti-sodomy laws.
