A Word to Graduates

This is the time of year when high school and college students graduate and are looking to make an impact in society at large. Before making a living and contributing to society’s betterment, what should young adults do to continue living for Jesus once out of school?

Sean McDowell, assistant professor in the Christian Apologetics program at Biola University, has some God-centered tips for young, Christian adults. McDowell suggests young adults should take God’s calling on their lives seriously but not take themselves too seriously, learn the difference between arrogance and confidence, stop comparing themselves to others, live with an understanding that God calls them to be faithful today as well as at the end of the age, and show the love of Christ to those who hurt them.

Students for Life Surprises Pregnant Teen With Graduation Ceremony

High school senior Maddi Runkles got pregnant out of wedlock and for that she was temporarily suspended from her Christian school, removed from leadership roles, and not allowed to attend her Heritage Academy graduation.

Instead of choosing abortion, Runkles chose to keep the baby and she chose to voluntarily tell the whole student body that she sinned by having sex before marriage.

For these brave moves, Students for Life honored the 4.0 student recently by giving her a graduation ceremony at a Methodist church near her home, at which she was provided $16,000 in scholarship funds and 7,000 messages of support.

For Believers who question whether one should support an out-of-wedlock teen, Kristen Hawkins, president of Students for Life, explains, “Over half of women who have abortions identify as Christians and more than 40 percent of those are regular churchgoers.” Hawkins hopes to inspire Christian schools to “reexamine their treatment of pregnant students.”

Graduation Speech Pulled for Christian Content

Thirteen-year-old salutatorian Seth Clark of Akin, Ill., wanted to talk about God in his grade-school graduation speech to his small group of classmates but was denied the opportunity by the school district’s superintendent, Kelly Clark, who pulled his speech. One of the young Mr. Clark’s neighbors came up with a solution; he invited students to come to his house across from the school after the graduation so that the young Clark could give his speech about God’s forgiveness and living a holy life. An estimated 50–60 people took him up on the invitation.
