California Recognizes Third Gender Option for State IDs

Californians can now claim a third gender of “non-binary” on state driver’s licenses, identification cards, and birth certificates after Gov. Jerry Brown signed the Gender Recognition Act into law on Sunday.

The bill takes effect January 1, 2019. Non-binary means that the person does not identify as either male or female.

Though this is the first time that any state has offered a third non-binary gender option, Oregon and the District of Columbia started offering the gender-neutral “X”  for “not specified” on state identification cards and driver’s licenses earlier this year.
