NC Votes to ‘Repeal and Replace’ HB 2

Yesterday, the North Carolina Legislature voted to approve a “compromise” on HB 2, the bill that was passed to protect the privacy and safety of women and children in bathrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas. The new law (1) preempts local governments from passing their own access policies for multiple occupancy bathrooms, and (2) enacts a four-year moratorium on the ability of cities and counties to enact nondiscrimination policies that go beyond state law relative to private employment and public accommodations. Social conservatives were not happy with the repeal, but LGBT activists were incensed that their hands are still largely tied for the next several years when it comes to getting cities to enact their agenda.

Privacy Bill Advances in Texas

While Tennessee Rep. Mark Pody deferred this week’s hearing on his bill to protect the privacy and safety of men and women in bathrooms and locker rooms, a similar bill moved forward in Texas this week. That state’s Senate State Affairs Committee approved its bill by a vote of 7-1. North Carolina’s. Lt. Gov. Dan Forest testified that the boycott of his state over its privacy bill affected their state’s economy by about 1/10th of one percent, hardly an amount, he said, worth giving “a man a free pass to enter a shower or locker room for any nefarious purpose.”

Target’s Revenue Falls Dramatically Fourth Quarter

Target reported a 43-percent decline in net earnings for their fourth quarter and their stock has hit a two-year low, yet the company refuses to admit that part of the reason for the plummeting sales could be due to the boycott over the retail chain’s bathroom and changing room policy that disregards the privacy and safety of women and children. This goes to show the importance of citizens promoting their values with their wallets.

DOJ Takes Measure to Protect Privacy in Transgender Bathroom Mandate Case

The Department of Justice, under new Attorney General Jeff Sessions, has withdrawn a request from the Obama DOJ that would have blocked a federal court injunction against enforcement of Obama’s “guidance letter” purporting to mandate that bathrooms in public schools be designated by feelings rather than biology.

According to Gary McCaleb, senior counsel with the legal group Alliance Defending Freedom, this is “good news for the privacy, safety, and dignity of young students across America.” The injunction now prohibits the ACLU and others from threatening lawsuits against schools based on the “guidance letter.”
