Tennessee Cities Rank Among Least Post-Christian Cities in America

According to a Barna study, eight of the ten most post-Christian cities in the United States are in the Northeast. Top cities in this area include Portland-Auburn, Maine, ranked number one, followed by Boston, Mass., Providence, R.I., New Bedford, Mass., Burlington, Vt., and Plattsburgh, N.Y., Hartford-New Haven, Conn., and New York City. The two West Coast areas that also made the top ten were San Franciso-Oakland-San Jose, Calif., and Seattle-Tacoma, Wash.

The rankings were the result of interviews with residents of the various cities. To be deemed “post-Christian,” a person had to meet nine of sixteen criteria that reflect “a lack of Christian identity, belief and practice.” The cities were then ranked based on the percentage of the population that met the post-Christian criteria.

Of the top 100 cities, Knoxville ranked 75th, Nashville ranked 89th, and Chattanooga, the Tri-Cities, and Memphis ranked 96th, 97th, and 98th respectively.
