Legal Group Hopes Supreme Court Will Hear Florist Case As Well

Alliance Defending Freedom has asked that the U.S. Supreme Court consolidate the case of Colorado baker Jack Phillips with Washington state florist Barronelle Stutzman. The basis for the request is that both cases deal with the creative expression rights of Christian artists to deny requests for same-sex “wedding” services if it goes against their strongly held religious beliefs.

Both Phillips and Stutzman were willing to continue to sell products to their respective customers and were willing to identify other businesses that would have provided the “wedding” services they wanted, but the two homosexual couples chose to press their issues through lawsuits.

It is hoped that since the Court has agreed to hear Phillips’ case, it will also hear Stutzman’s case. Phillips’ case is scheduled to be heard in the fall.

ADF Fights Back Against ABC’s ‘Hate Group’ Comment

After an ABC News segment with Pete Madden and Erin Galloway about U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in which it called Alliance Defending Freedom an “anti-LGBT hate group,” ADF asked the news channel to apologize and retract the defamatory story. “ABC News has committed journalistic malpractice. For ABC News to essentially cut and paste false charges against Alliance Defending Freedom by a radically left-wing, violence-inciting organization like Southern Poverty Law Center is a discredit to ABC News and to the profession,” said ADF Legal Counsel and Director of Communications Kerri Kupec, who recently appeared on FOX & Friends to talk about the controversy. To its credit, ADF is a well-respected and successful Supreme Court advocate for those fighting for free speech, religious liberty, and life.

SPLC Flags Key Nonprofits as Hate Groups

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has teamed up with GuideStar, an organization that rates the credibility and value of a nonprofit, to flag nonprofits it deems hateful.

The SPLC logo and link to its website now appear at the top of GuideStar’s review of each entity that SPLC deems a hate group, along with a statement that the organization was flagged as such by SPLC. Pro-family organizations ADF, AFA, FRC, and Liberty Counsel are grouped together with the Ku Klux Klan, the Nation of Islam, Westboro Baptist Church, and the New Black Panthers.

Of course, anything anti-LGBT is considered an automatic hate-mongering ideology. Incidentally, FACT was included in SPLC’s “Anti-LGBT Roundup of Events and Activities 6-12-17” for its biblically-based positions before the Legislature and courts on LGBT issues.

Farmer Denied Participation in Farmer’s Market Due to Religious Beliefs

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) filed a lawsuit this week on behalf of Michigan organic farmer Steve Tennes of Country Mill Farms, who was denied participation in East Lansing’s farmer’s market, even though he had consistently provided exceptional service as a participant in the farmer’s market for the past six years. His offense? He mentioned his religious beliefs about marriage on his farm’s Facebook page. East Lansing city officials saw the post and then began developing a new policy aimed at blocking Tennes from participation.

ADF Encourages 9th Circuit to Uphold Daleiden’s First Amendment Rights

Through a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of the Susan B. Anthony List Education Fund, Alliance Defending Freedom is asking the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal for an en banc (“by all the judges”) review of a three-judge panel’s split decision in National Abortion Federation v. Center for Medical Progress.

The panel upheld a trial court’s decision that barred David Daleiden from releasing videos made while attending National Abortion Federation conferences in 2014 and 2015. The case relates to the First Amendment rights of investigative journalists.
