Parents and grandparents should know that some middle schoolers are engaging in a new cyberbullying social media game called roasting. Roasting involves young teens posting videos or photos of themselves on Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, or Reddit with hashtag #roastme and then asking folks to insult them.
The responses can range from lighthearted to downright hurtful, so why would some of these young people feel compelled to participate? Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz says it could be a cry for help from a depressed teen or it could mean the child feels left out. Whatever the reason, participating in this new game, whether by asking to be roasted or doing the roasting, can be very damaging.
