Sponsor(s): Bell in the Senate; Dunn in the House

SUMMARY

As introduced, requires justices of the Supreme Court to be chosen by nonpartisan elections. Amends TCA Title 2; Title 16 and Title 17.

STATUS

Senate:  Referred to the Judiciary Committee on 2/9/2011.

House:  Assigned to a Judiciary Committee subcommittee on 2/18/11.

FACT’S ANALYSIS

This bill would repeal the current process by which Tennessee Supreme Court Justices are appointed by the Governor and later subject to an uncontested retention election.  It would reinstall contested elections for the Court with Judges running in 5 districts (Constitution requires 5 Justices.)
