According to a Pew Research Center study, God or the divine is mentioned at least once in each of the 50 state constitutions and nearly 200 times overall. The states that most mention God or the divine are Massachusetts (12 references) and North Carolina (10 references). Tennessee’s constitution has four such references. States with only one reference to God or the divine in their state constitutions include Iowa, Colorado, Wyoming, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. Far from leaving God out of government, as some would have us believe, those who drafted our state constitutions thought it best to acknowledge a power higher than themselves at least once.
