Parents, Watch Out for Roku

With summer still in full swing, there are more hours for children to watch TV shows and movies online. And that means more of a risk of discovering some unsavory entertainment. Roku streaming service provides secret backdoor access to hardcore porn, according to Dawn Hawkins of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.

“They are facilitating access to hardcore pornography channels—hundreds of private and hidden channels—and none of the other streaming companies allow this,” she says.

Currently, Roku is the only streaming service without parental controls, although parents can establish a PIN that must be entered to add new channels. However, it will not block programs on channels already added.

If you already have Roku or are concerned with parental controls for other streaming services, read this guide from National Center on Sexual Exploitation.
