No Money Down the Toilet After North Carolina’s HB 2

During the “bathroom bill” (HB 2) debate in the N.C. Legislature in 2016, LGBT activists in North Carolina threatened that separating bathroom and locker room usage by biological sex would lead to the economic downfall of the Tar Heel State as LGBT-friendly businesses pulled out of the state.

This economic boycott never really materialized. In fact, according to the Economic Development Partnership, visitor spending in North Carolina during 2016 actually increased in 97 out of 100 counties; visitors to the state spent a record of nearly $23 billion, which is 4.4 percent higher than the year before. Plus, North Carolina was the sixth most visited state.
