New York City Gender-Neutral Birth Certificates Become a Reality

This week a New York City law went into effect that allows adults to change their birth certificates to reflect either “male,” “female,” or the so-called gender-neutral “X” and gives parents the same options for their newborns.

New Yorkers no longer need a letter from a physician or an affidavit signed by a licensed health care provider to change their sex on their birth certificates. No gender reassignment surgery necessary.

“You be you. Live your truth. And know that New York City will have your back,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said after signing the measure into law last October.

California, Oregon, Washington state, and New Jersey (in February) also have similar laws.
