Jack Phillips Targeted by Another LGBT Activist

In June, Christian cake baker Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop won a five-year battle against the Colorado Civil Rights Commission for refusing to create a custom cake for a same-sex wedding because of his deeply-held beliefs on marriage, but now that same commission is after him again.

This time the commission is targeting Phillips for declining to create a cake that would be blue on the outside and pink on the inside in order to celebrate the customer’s transition from male to female. The commission ruled on June 28 that the refusal amounted to unlawful discrimination based on gender identity.

On Tuesday, Alliance Defending Freedom filed suit against the commission on Jack’s behalf contending that the commission is seeking to punish him on the basis of his religious beliefs and is asking for punitive damages. Regrettably, this is the result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s failure to address Phillips’ main arguments in the earlier decision that his First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religious expression were violated.
