Fate of UMC’s Stance on Gay ‘Marriage’ at Stake

Karen Oliveto of Denver was elected bishop by the United Methodist Church’s (UMC) Western Jurisdiction last summer, even though she is a married lesbian. Within hours, her election was contested by the South Central Jurisdiction because church law bars practicing homosexuals from being church leaders.

Arguments in connection with Oliveto’s election were before the United Methodist denomination’s Judicial Council Tuesday.

The denomination’s decision will determine if openly gay men and women can be church leaders and will shape the United Methodist denomination’s future theological direction.
