Miss USA’s comment the other week that health care was not a right provoked the ire of many. That’s understandable. It can be scary to face an illness, particularly an expensive one, when there’s no insurance to help cover the cost.
But where does that right come from?
Historically, rights did not come from government itself. Rather, rights—real rights—were rights that the government only recognized and could not interfere with. The right was more a right to be free from government action, not a right to government action.
Today, though, we are moving toward a belief that rights are granted by the government. That may get some what they want today, but those who ground their rights in government rather than God need to remember that tomorrow that same government can take those rights away.
