At a recent forum for Tennessee’s gubernatorial candidates, the candidates were asked a number of questions designed to gauge their support for public education. But the real question that needed to be asked and answered was, “What is the purpose of an education?”
But the purpose of education is a politically touchy subject, because the candidates, who all profess to be Christian, would be excoriated if they gave the answer Christ would have given—to have a child grow to love God with all his or her heart, soul, and mind. And therein lies a problem for Christian parents—the required exclusion of God from the public school instruction is making it an increasingly difficult option for Christians. More than ever, the Church needs to consider how it can help families provide a Christian education for their children.
