Last week the City of San Antonio refused to let Chick-fil-A lease space at its airport because of its disdain for the charitable causes Chick-fil-A supports. While that is unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination, Chick-fil-A will most likely turn the other cheek and not sue.
But, on the bright side, last week Tennessee Representative Jason Zachary led his state House colleagues in passing a bill that would prevent cities from discriminating against a business because it had not voluntarily made sexual orientation or gender identity a protected status under its personnel policies. The bill also prevents cities from discriminating against businesses that do not include abortion coverage under their group health insurance plan.
While all acts of prejudice against Christian-owned businesses can’t be stopped, this is a good start. The Senate will begin to consider the bill next week.
