Last week a number of evangelicals released the “Nashville Statement,” a document on human sexuality. The Statement was rooted in the psalmist’s declaration that it is God “who has made us, and not we ourselves.”
The Statement’s Preamble offered a keen insight: Either we believe God created us and the distinction between male and female is good, as Genesis says, or the distinction is simply due to random genetic mutations that could have been otherwise, in which case we are free to import our own sense of meaning into those distinctions.
When confronted with the only two choices we really have in regard to our origins, we find the issue of human sexuality is nothing less than a particular application of what we said recently, “If Genesis is not history, then that . . . changes everything.”
