As this two-year cycle of Tennessee’s Legislature winds down, social conservatives need to understand something: The natural tendency of political parties in the majority is to make sure they stay in the majority.
Over the last two years, that’s been done by party leaders making sure their party members don’t have to vote on particularly tough political issues. And right now, that’s been legislation that might cause an economic boycott by groups like the Human Rights Campaign. That is why, for the last two years, bills that would limit the LGBT movement weren’t even moved or seconded, let alone voted on.
So, when a candidate this fall says to you that he or she is a social conservative, make sure that candidate is more loyal to you and to those values than to his or her party’s majority status.
