With the state law defining marriage without regard to the sex of the parties, it’s worth asking why Christians submit to a government’s legal scheme that is contrary to God’s law.
Our natural thought is that we need a “real” marriage, but in God’s sight, marriage is based on a covenant commitment before Him and witnesses, not a state license. In fact, that was the whole idea behind common law marriage.
Given that, the reason to enter into a legal marriage is so that the couple secures the government benefits that come with it, the very ones same-sex couples said they were being denied.
But are government benefits a sufficient reason to agree to the government’s unbiblical definition of marriage if a biblical marriage can exist apart from man’s law? A tough question for Christian couples to answer.
