When the Supreme Court said states could only license marriages that eliminated any requirement that the parties be a male and female, it meant that legal marriage had now been defined that way for everybody. Government-licensed marriages are now defined contrary to how God defines marriage.
Herein lies a difficulty for evangelicals. With respect to legal marriages, ministers are agents of the state. The marriage license is what actually authorizes them to approve a state-sanctioned marriage. Though they are simultaneously solemnizing a covenant marriage, at the end of the ceremony, they always declare the couple married by the authority vested in them by the state.
That being the case, should ministers participate in creating for the state that which God’s law forbids? Should Christian couples even ask them to? These are tough questions we all need to answer.
