Barronelle Stutzman, the Washington state florist whose state courts said she violated state law for not designing a floral arrangement for a same-sex wedding, is now asking the United States Supreme Court to hear her case.
While her primary argument is rooted in the First Amendment’s freedoms related to speech and expression, many Christians see the case as one of religious liberty. While religious liberty certainly appeals to Christians, it can hide what is really a claim by others to religious neutrality. And, from God’s perspective, there is no such thing.
Religious neutrality is at root polytheism. But rejecting cultural polytheism does not justify acrimonious attitudes. It does mean we need to see that embracing a religious liberty that promotes a religiously neutral culture denies God’s claim to His creation and the Gospel.
