Pro-abortion Democrat Doug Jones won Alabama’s Senate seat over former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore in Tuesday’s special election to fill the seat that was vacated by now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Jones, a supporter of many left-wing causes, was endorsed by the pro-LGBT Human Rights Campaign.
The loss of this staunch conservative seat is very significant, both for Alabama and for the nation as a whole. There will be 34 Senate seats open in 2018, but 26 of those are held by Democrats. The Dems need to gain only two of the eight Republican seats to take control, so the loss of this Senate seat is crucial at a time when our country’s conservative voters are increasingly showing their disenfranchisement at the polls.
