FACT President Comments on ‘Reclaiming Our Liberty’ Initiative

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (October 27, 2015) —The following statement regarding the Reclaiming our Liberty initiative launched today by The Family Action Council of Tennessee (FACT) can be attributed to its President, David Fowler:

“The Reclaiming Our Liberty initiative gives Tennesseans a way to have a voice in protecting the liberties taken from them and from the states by the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges this summer.

“Many Tennesseans were outraged by the Supreme Court’s decision overriding the clearly expressed will of the people of Tennessee on the issue of marriage. But many were equally outraged that in two short years the Court went from saying issues related to the family were matters of state concern to saying they were not.

“We believe Tennesseans understand that if the Supreme Court can take away our rights as individuals and as states to control matters like marriage, then the Court can take away any right and any power a state may think it has. But many didn’t know how they could fight back.

“Reclaiming Our Liberty gives them a way to do that by taking a successful page out of the states’ rights playbook from the 1900s. When Congress would not send the states a constitutional amendment for the direct election of our U.S. senators, the states, along with local organizations and political parties, began passing resolutions demanding that their voices be heard. And, eventually, they were.

“The fact some Tennessee counties like McMinn and Johnson are already doing what this initiative hopes to support and foster should be a great encouragement to citizens in other counties to stand up and speak out. Perhaps Tennesseans will become the “volunteers” who start a similar spark for freedom in other states.”

FACT President Comments on UT’s Gender-Neutral Policy

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (August 31, 2015) —The following statement regarding the University of Tennessee’s gender-neutral policy can be attributed to David Fowler, the President of The Family Action Council of Tennessee (FACT):

“The recent communication by The University of Tennessee Office for Diversity and Inclusion asking students and faculty not to assume that a man is a “he” and a woman is a “she” is an insult to the overwhelming majority of Tennesseans who are not confused about the concept of male and female. Policies like this reveal the descent of higher education to a standard of morality measured by the lowest common denominator.

“This misguided effort to change the English language is also an insult to the taxpayers of Tennessee who are financing this fanciful attempt by alleged educators to disregard the reality behind the biological fact that men and women have distinct sets of chromosomes.

“Those in higher education who banter on about the inclusiveness of using gender-neutral pronouns seem not to understand that they necessarily exclude those who do not accept and embrace their understanding of human sexuality. In doing so, they violate the standard of tolerance they demand of everyone else. That they are either unwilling or incapable of seeing the inconsistency of their own view of tolerance should disqualify them from trying to educate anyone.”

Court Strips People of Freedom to Democratically Determine Meaning and Role of Marriage

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (June 26, 2015) —The following statement can be attributed to David Fowler, the President of The Family Action Council of Tennessee (FACT):

Today a handful of Americans on the Court have stripped the people of the freedom to democratically address the meaning and role of society’s most fundamental institution, marriage. The majority have arrogantly said they are not only smarter than the 50 million Americans who have voted to affirm marriage as the union of a man and a woman, but also millions of human beings over thousands of years across the entire globe.

As with Roe v. Wade in 1973, the Court has taken sides on a domestic policy not addressed in our Constitution and told believers in natural marriage that their voice is not allowed. But when people begin to experience the effects of this ruling in ways they never envisioned, the Court may find that it has only awakened a slumbering giant.

Mr. Fowler, when a state Senator, sponsored the amendment to Tennessee’s constitution that defined marriage as one man and one woman, and the Family Action Council of Tennessee organized the RealMarriage.org campaign that led to the passage of the Amendment by 81% of the vote.

FACT President Applauds New Abortion Safety Regulations

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (May 19, 2015) —The following statement can be attributed to David Fowler, the President of The Family Action Council of Tennessee (FACT) regarding new abortion regulations signed into law by Governor Haslam on Monday:

I applaud our Governor and state legislature for honoring the vote of the people of this state on Amendment 1 by enacting common sense protections for women seeking an abortion.

No life altering surgical procedure should be performed in this state without the patient knowing that the law ensures their safety and informed consent, and that is particularly true with abortion. We know that women considering abortion often make decisions under pressure and under the mistaken impression that they have no alternatives.

By requiring that women be provided basic information and an opportunity to reflect on that information, the value of the woman’s life and that of her unborn child are both affirmed.
