Tennessee’s pro-life legislators are fighting over which of two pro-life bills to pass. One, known as the “trigger bill,” would limit abortion except in cases involving the life of the mother, but only if Roe v. Wade is reversed. The other, the fetal heartbeat bill, prohibits abortions once a heartbeat is detected.
Some legislators believe the trigger bill is too passive. Others believe the heartbeat bill is too aggressive and the state will waste money trying to defend it.
But what is wrong with Tennessee spending a million dollars out of a $38.5 billion budget in an effort to bring about Roe v. Wade’s demise?
Since defeating Roe is an uphill climb, passing the trigger bill as a backup hurts nothing.
We think legislators should put aside this either-or perspective and pass both bills.
