Driving the ACA into Counseling (January 11, 2017)

Tennessee legislators are again under fire from the secular humanists within the American Counseling Association.

Last year, legislators prohibited a provision in the ACA’s ethical rules from being used to force Tennessee counselors to counsel contrary to their religious beliefs. But legislators saw a bigger issue – it was bad public policy to let unelected members of private associations, drawn from across the country, determine the ethical rules for Tennessee’s counselors.

Legislators want the rules for counselors to be set by following the process used for all other licensed professionals, a process that allows public input and accountability. This is an anathema to the secular humanists in the ACA, who want their private group to set the rules. But what if the American Christian Counseling Association set the rules instead? That just might drive the secular humanists into counseling.

Will Jesus Be Found in the Attic This New Year? (January 4, 2017)

The New Year means putting away all the Christmas “stuff,” and doing so brings to mind an old Larnelle Harris song that describes a son helping his father put away the Christmas decorations in the attic. The son asks, “Do we store away Jesus, too?”

A cute question posed in childlike innocence, but we dare not dismiss its real-life relevance. It’s easy to think of the Advent as God becoming man and forget the Ascension—Jesus returning to Heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father as the presently reigning Lord over all things.

In the New Year, let’s all remember that the Christ Child is also the Risen Lord. If we forget that, if don’t live like it’s true, then perhaps we have stored Him away in the attic of our lives.

Unto Us a King Born (December 21, 2016)

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: Of the increase of His government . . . there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to order it, and to establish it.”

This passage from Isaiah 9:6, 7 is often read at Christmas, but do we appreciate what it really says?

It’s about more than Jesus in a manager. It’s about Jesus inaugurating and restoring His Kingdom rule over all things.

Many today want to confine Jesus to the manager; they don’t want Him showing up in the halls of civil government. Like the innkeeper of old, they don’t have room for Him there. This Christmas may we see Jesus as the King He is, not just the baby He was.

Arkansas Supreme Court States the Obvious (December 14, 2016)

Last week the Arkansas Supreme Court did something right. It limited the U.S. Supreme Court’s same-sex “marriage” decision in Obergefell v. Hodges to only the right to marry.

The Arkansas case involved a lesbian married couple, one of whom had a child by artificial insemination. They wanted the Court to change the language of the birth certificate law to require the listing of two mothers instead of a mother and father. They argued that Obergefell required the courts to treat them the same as heterosexual couples.

But the court said there was no unequal treatment because “[i]t does not violate equal protection to acknowledge basic biological truths.”

Hooray that at least one state’s Judiciary was willing to say the obvious—a same-sex “marriage” may be legal, but it is not the same as a marriage between a man and a woman.
