FACT Report: Deadly Indifference

The day of the Las Vegas shooting, two U.S. representatives refused to acknowledge a moment of silence for the victims because of the Republican Party’s views on gun control. Doing such a thing when so many are grieving reflects a profound callousness toward the sacredness of life.

How do we know that? The next day, both representatives voted against the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, H.R. 36, which would ban abortions from being performed 20 weeks or more after fertilization, except when the pregnancy is a result of reported rape or reported incest against a minor, or is necessary to save the life of the mother.

Out of a heart indifferent to the killing of innocent babies in the womb comes indifference toward the innocents killed in our streets. And that’s a problem gun control can’t fix.

FACT Report: Can Pragmatists Deal with Roy Moore?

Some opposed Judge Roy Moore in Alabama’s Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate because he wasn’t “pragmatic” and wouldn’t be able to “get things done.”

But not being a pragmatist is a good thing. Pragmatism is actually a worldview that says there are no transcendent truths to guide our decisions, so we just go with “what works” or, more accurately, what seems to work. That is what is “true.” But Judge Moore believes there is a Creator God and that the Scriptures give us real truth about the nature of things, why they are the way they are, and what we need to do to improve things.

That’s why pragmatists who actually understand the difference between their worldview and Judge Moore’s come after him. They just don’t know how to deal with those who aren’t pragmatic.

FACT Report: Can Liberty Survive Constitutional Ignorance?

Last week we celebrated Constitution week, commemorating the date in September 1787 on which the Continental Congress’ draft of the U.S. Constitution was sent to Congress for consideration. But a recent survey by Newsweek about our knowledge of the Constitution showed little to celebrate.

Seventy percent of the 1,000 citizens surveyed couldn’t even correctly identify the Constitution as the supreme law of the land. Nearly one-third could not identify even one branch of government, and, with respect to the First Amendment, 37 percent could not name one right guaranteed by the First Amendment and only fifteen percent identified the freedom of religion.

Our Constitution was designed to protect liberty from a tyrannical national government and allow for as much self-government as possible. But when we don’t understand that Constitution, then a loss of liberty and self-government is sure to follow.

FACT Report: DACA and the Rule of Law

Last week President Trump began the process of winding down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) that was instituted by President Obama by executive order.

While the young adults served by the program did not come to America of their own volition and how we should now treat them is a question about which reasonable minds may differ, one thing is clear: The program is a change in immigration policy that only Congress should have been able to constitutionally authorize. In other words, the Constitution and the rule of law that requires adherence to the Constitution have been ignored.

When presidents, Congress, and the American people are willing to lay aside the rule of law because it “interferes” with what they want to do, then history teaches us that tyranny, in time, is sure to follow.
