Town Hall Meeting Flames Interest
(November 1, 2009) – October saw the Family Action Council of Tennessee break its previous three-year high for one-day Web traffic by about 79 percent. This incredible activity was the product of a town hall meeting hosted by WMBW radio, the Moody network affiliate in Chattanooga.
After a Pastors’ Prayer Breakfast and Legislative Briefing in Chattanooga this past spring, the local station’s manager decided more people in the local listening area needed to know what was going on in our public squares. So, FACT’s President, David Fowler, joined forces with WMBW and Nate Kellum, senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, to put on a live-broadcast town hall meeting on the topic, “Will Christian Values Survive in America?”
No doubt, the information shared in that broadcast touched a nerve for a lot of folks, based on the number of people visiting and number pages viewed on our Web site over the next 24 hours. Our hats are off to our good friends at WMBW for their great idea.

Baptists Form Ethics & Public Affairs Team
(November 1, 2009) – God is continuing to bless FACT with churches and ministries that wish to partner in FACT’s mission of promoting and defending a culture that values the traditional family for the sake of the common good. One of the biggest challenges an organization like FACT faces is communication. Although FACT’s e-mail newsletter subscribership is growing at a rapid rate, month by month, there are still so many people in Tennessee who have not heard about this ministry.
In order to spread the word, Dr. David Shelley, FACT’s Director of Community Relations, in partnership with the Nashville Baptist Association of churches, is leading a new ministry called the Ethics & Public Affairs Team. There are approximately 180 Southern Baptist Churches and Missions in the Nashville Baptist Association, so this new ministry will enable FACT to make those congregations aware of the various ethical, family, sanctity of life, and religious liberty issues in the Tennessee legislature, as well as in the local Metro Nashville government. This ministry will follow the same model as many of the state’s local churches have followed in establishing a Salt and Light Committee or Moral Concerns Committee.
The following statements explain the purpose of the Ethics & Public Affairs Team:
- To provide accurate, nonpartisan information and encouragement to the NBA churches in addressing moral, family and religious liberty-related legislation that is before our government officials.
- By providing factual information, the E&PA Ministry Team will urge the NBA churches to be informed (John 8:32), to pray for elected officials (I Timothy 2:1-2), and to make their voices heard in the political sphere under the freedoms granted by the U.S. Constitution (II Samuel 12).
- By doing so, the E&PA Team will help to equip the saints for the work of the ministry of being salt and light in the public square (Matthew 5:13-16).
